Since 1960, Gallery on the Green has kept an historic 1872 schoolhouse on the Canton Green open as a place for artists to exhibit and sell their work, and for the community to engage with art. Mission, History and Purpose

Gallery on the Green is a place for people to come together and share their passion for art. As a non-profit, our mission is "to offer artists and the community a varied program of cultural activities. For artists, Gallery on the Green provides support as well as a place to exhibit and sell work. For the public, the gallery is a unique atmosphere to engage with and purchase art."

Since 1960, in addition to providing community art exhibits and programs, the Canton Artists' Guild has been a gathering place for artists and for those who enjoy art. The Guild has also maintained its home, a beautiful historic building, originally a school house built in 1872, with three galleries set on the Canton Green.

Special Projects

Each year we accomplish special maintenance projects through business sponsorships, special events, and donations from our generous community. Thanks to private donors, this past year we replaced the roof on our building and will have the interior painted during our holiday hiatus. Member dues pay for regular operating expenses but special projects and improvements are dependent upon private donations. In 2011 The Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Arts Fund, Inc, gave us the money to build the access ramp to the first floor of the gallery to allow us to show the artwork of a Connecticut based wheelchair bound landscape photographer Andrew Buck, so this community gift made the first floor accessible in perpetuity.

Project Lift

As once our first floor was not handicapped accessible, our upstairs galleries are accessible only by way of the original stairway. Many of our over 2,000 visitors a year are unable to climb the stairs, preventing them from participating in all of our exhibits and visiting our GalleryShop. To remedy the situation, we have begun the planning of an added elevator to access the two upstairs galleries and GalleryShop. This project, Project Lift, will be extensive and expensive—an addition to the building which will require hiring an architect, the cooperation of the State Historic Preservation Office and appropriate permits, as well as hiring a qualified builder experienced with additions to historic buildings. We expect this project to cost $300,000 or more by the time it's done.

Operating Costs

In addition to using donations, we raise operating funds through member dues. These operating expenses continue to rise making donations all that much more important. In order for the Canton Artists Guild to remain a resource for our community, we need your donation to our annual fund which will help support our programs, building and expenses. A gift of any amount helps us further our reach into the community. Your support is not only a donation—it's a gift to the entire community.
